For the first time in his career, National champion P. Gopi Chand has been
seeded in the All England championships. The Indian star is the No. 10 seed
in the men's singles event of the most prestigious of badminton majors which
begins on March 6. The Danes, led by world No. 1, Peter Gade Christensen,
have been seeded at the No. 1 slot in four of the five events in the seedings
announced for the four-star Grand Prix tournament here on Tuesday. Peter
Gade's fiancee, Camilla Martin, is the top seed in the women's section. The
lone top spot that has not gone to the Danish players has been taken by the
Indonesians, Flandi Limpele and Eng Hian, who head the men's doubles
seedings. Less than a month ago, Gopi looked to be headed for a top eight
seeding at the All England, but his current ranking of 10th, from his best
ever of sixth, perhaps ruled that out. In the women's singles, defending
champion and Olympic gold medallist Gong Zhichao of China is seeded to meet
Camilla Martin in the final. The Chinese has a 6-1 record in their head-
to-head chart.
